CHAPTER 16

Monica

My thighs still trembled as I cleaned myself up in the bathroom. I’d never had sex like that... ever. Even with Winston, back in the day. And we’d been younger then. I’d been more athletic.

Sex had always been great. Amazing, even.

But this... this was something else.

Because this wasn’t the same old Winston and Monica as we had been in the past. This was an all-new, improved Winston and Monica. With ten percent more chemistry. More, even.

I found Winston in the bedroom. He had one of my old nightdresses and held it up on its hanger to me as I entered. “Stay the night? Can you? Or must you dash off at the stroke of midnight, lest you turn into a pumpkin?”

I smiled. “I don’t think she turns into a pumpkin. I think that’s her carriage. But yes. I can stay. If you’d like me to.”

“Don’t be coy with me, Monica. You know I want you to.” He handed me the nightdress, our fingers skimming across each other in the exchange.

I met his eyes. They were just as alive with passion as they had been when our bodies had met. But the passion now was softer, sweeter... but no less intense.

“Just as you know that... I still love you.” He faltered only for a moment – just a flicker of apprehension there. But he pushed through it. He was being brave, I realized. He was worried I was going to hurt him again. “I never stopped loving you. I may have tried to work around the pain and the confusion after you left... but that’s all it was. A workaround to a new and constant feeling that I’d lost something important to me.”

He took both my hands, and my nightdress slithered to the floor, forgotten.

“I thought I’d be in that state of loss forever. But I don’t have to be. We don’t have to be. Not if you feel the same way – as I confess, I hope you do, but I don’t have any expectations that you will...” He shook his head, trying to get his words right. “I want you, Monica, and only you. I love you. And if you’ll have me, if you’ll give me another chance, I’d like to make things right with you. And with me. Because I betrayed myself very, very badly the day I let you down so much that you had no choice but to leave.”

“Winston.” I surprised myself – my words came out trembling. I was close to tears. When I spoke next, my voice was barely more than a whisper; the only way I dared say the words out loud, “I love you too. I still do. I always have.”

He replied to me in whispers. “Will you give me another chance, Monica?”

I nodded slowly. “Yes. But I need some time. Time to figure things out. But yes. I want to. I will. More than anything.”

Winston wasn’t a man who cried, but I could swear his eyes were shinier than usual in the dim lamplight.
